Buy VII, get one free at Costco ?
Written by David WhiteThey’ve got all sorts of offers down there at the minute. You can even pop in to download your memory card and have a few quick prints spat out. That could be useful in a hard news situation. Which reminds me – Corbis rep VII.
So, you should be able to pick up some of the greatest photojournalism shot in my lifetime down your local Costco. And why not? I like a Bleasdale with my Chianti, a Kratchovil with my cornflakes.
So, maybe a Parr with your Whopper is on the cards? A Soth with your Sushi? Who knows any more, who knows.
But don’t worry folks, the duck are out to buy Getty within 4 years, we’re well on track…and once we do…MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

I think this is a good idea to be honest. Simply because we will get some audience feedback on what they think, what they like, and at what price point. No more will some curator sitting in an ivory tower go “you are worthy” or not. Someone with a brain should be quantifying the whole process as if the curators are still fixated only on artistic merit, the business people in Costco will do the hard work of building the information needed to do business in order to please its audience/customers.
I bet with the creation of a market, it will be hard for the likes of £700-a-workshop agency and the 50%-of-MSF-charity-money agency to turn down someone who is just proving to be financially successful in ways that they do not like. Maybe it might make things meritocratic instead of autocratic at last!!!!
It will also make a mockery of those who think they can script, shoot and edit film as well as film makers all because they now have a Canon 5D mk2 – try selling those “multimedia” photographic slideshows in Costco!
