duckrabbit posted this on April 25th, 2011 The Democratic Republic of Congo is the most colourful place I’ve ever visited. The women even smile.

Infact it’s the Muzungus (white people) who were the most drab, including this dodgy looking geezer:

duckrabbit posted this on June 17th, 2010 Yasuyoshi is in South Africa shooting The World Cup. He emailed me today to say that one of his photos was a two page centre spread in the Guardian. If anyone saw it, or has a copy please give me a shout. In true Chiba style he hasn’t shot anywhere near a football stadium preferring [...]

It’s one of those moments you don’t forget.
This term I’ve been a guest lecturer at Birmingham City University. I sat twenty students down in front of one of the four videos we’ve been producing for MSF (more of [...]
duckrabbit posted this on June 10th, 2009 There’s a quiet and thoughtful audio slideshow running on the BBC about the harsh reality of life for many of Zimabawe’s children. Take a moment out of your day to watch it and to reflect how ‘man hands on misery to man.’
The suffering in this world is only matched by the mass indifference towards [...]
duckrabbit posted this on May 21st, 2009 A few months ago I emailed a friend of mine who works in the Kibera slum in Nairobi suggesting they take a look at an amazing set of photos by Jehad Nga taken in the same slum.
‘My Shadow. My Opponent’ explores the lives, spaces and activities associated with boxing clubs in Kibera.
Instinctively I [...]
duckrabbit posted this on February 21st, 2009 bang it tells its story and then its gone again.
The problem is so many thoughtful photos get left behind.
It’s frightening how little we see of the pictures that really matter.
I only became aware of this when looking through Yasuyoshi Chiba’s photos of the Kenyan conflict.¬† If you were just to see the [...]

duckrabbit posted this on February 13th, 2009 This comes straight from duckrabbit’s heart, where else?
The Sri Lankan civil war has long been notorious for the LTTE’s recruitment of child soldiers. As the violence intensifies UNICEF is reporting that forcible recruitment of children is on the the increase despite assurances by the LTTE that they would no longer force children to fight. [...]
duckrabbit posted this on January 31st, 2009 duckrabbit thinks that The New York Times have established themselves as the most consistently interesting publisher of multimedia on the web. Their online tagline is ‘Breaking News, World News and Multimedia’. It’s clear that they aim to be a global brand, though with the way their revenue is heading the most likely brand they they’ll [...]
duckrabbit posted this on November 9th, 2008 Its such a cliche but the Washington Post’s latest set of photos from Congo tells more of a story then all the words written about the conflict. Perhaps this is because the photographer often gets closer to the truth then a print journalist ever can, closer to the moment, reveals a greater sense of place.

duckrabbit posted this on November 5th, 2008 In his interesting Blog: (notes on) politics, theory and photography, Jim Johnson writes about the photo of Yasuyoshi Chiba I posted yesterday:

duckrabbit posted this on November 4th, 2008 Boston.com has an overpowering page of images (31) covering the current humanitarian crisis in the Congo.¬† Some of the photos are taken by my fearless friend Yasuyoshi Chiba.¬† A lot of Africans think Yasuyoshi is a marshal arts expert, so despite the fact that he’s quite a small chap he never seems to get any [...]
duckrabbit posted this on October 26th, 2008 It was by chance that I came across the photography of Yasuyoshi Chiba in Kenya earlier this year and its great to see that I’m not the only one to recognize the importance of his work capturing the post election violence.
Earlier this year Yasuyoshi was one of four photographers nominated for the prestigious Visa [...]
duckrabbit posted this on September 5th, 2008 This is the article of mine the New Statesman published last week about the reality faced by the hundreds of thousands of people displaced by the post election violence in Kenya.
