Joseph Rodriguez – Where it’s at part 5

I was recently was given a much coveted copy of Joseph Rodriguez’s East Side Stories. It’s lush. It just re-confirms for me that the best place to see photography is in a book.

Galleries are good, but they often carry an elitist edge and rednecks like duckrabbit can feel a bit out of place.

The computer screen is good too, but photographs often get lost in the noise and knocked about unfairly by snap judgements.

Book print runs are often very small and expensive. They reach a small and often pretty exclusive group of people. I’d like everyone to see Joseph’s pictures, so if you come by my house there’s a good chance you’ll get the book put down in front of you.

Of course if you want to reach a really wide audience than the internet is the place to go That’s why Joseph’s latest project has its own website, and bloody good it is too.

And death came along …

I am trying to imagine the shock of a nuclear bomb taking out your city at the moment you sit down for breakfast. It’s not really the kind of thinking you want to start the day with but this morning I came across this impressive photographic report about Hiroshima on the ever great BOSTON BIG PICTURE.

I have heard and read a lot about Hiroshima, but never seen such cold and haunting images showing the before and after of the bombing on this very day, 64 years ago.

Photography can be a powerful reminder of history. At duckrabbit this is something we feel strongly about. On the day Britain also buried Harry Patch, the last veteran from WW1, its important to never forget the sacrifice; the loss of innocence.

Introducing: the real journalist of the future?

Adam Westbrook

Blogger Adam Westbrook has some very interesting things to say about the journalist of the future. He forgot to point out that no doubt

1.they’ll still be pissheads

and

2. most of their time will be spent dredging up highly embarrassing photos of celebrities you’ve never heard of (and bloggers), off social networking sites.

WESTBROOK just in case you’re plotting revenge I’m holding the picture of the chicken livers back. That said being a journalist of the future I’ll probably stick it on DEMOTIX to see if I can get any cash for it.

Benjamin Jarosch – The Banks

Regular duckrabbit readers will know that I’m not a big fan of black and white photography. David White, the photographer in duckrabbit, says it’s my blind slot. He’s right, but I’m learning.

I’ve just come across another learner. Benjamin Jarosch, a young New York based photographer looked me up on Skype to chew the fat on multimedia. He’s assisting one of the worlds greatest photojournalists, Joseph Rodriguez, whose work you’re going to be hearing and seeing a lot more of in the coming week or so but for once we’re going to start with the apprentice.

‘The Banks’ is obviously some skate park. More than that I don’t know and maybe Benjamin will add some comments for me to post here. What I LOVE about this set is its warmth and its tenderness. He’s taken a group of kids, typically stereotyped, and brought out the lyricism of their lives when it could have all been macho, stylized bullshit. You can sense real vulnerability in their lives.

Benjamin has found the right master to learn from. It shows.

“The Brooklyn Banks” as it is commonly called, is an internationally known skate park. It is one of the few places in New York where skaters and bikers can ride without running into legal problems. It is also a place of community created by youth from all over NYC who come here to live life and prove themselves. It is here that one can get a real taste of today’s New York.”

Children displaced by violence in Pakistan – Boston Big Picture

In this series of photographs the Boston Big Picture brings us the faces of the children affected by the ongoing military offensive in North Eastern Pakistan. It is estimated at least 3 million people have been displaced; the majority women and children.

Hang on a minute did duckrabbit really say three million? That’s more people than live in the city of Paris.

But as this pictures shows, despite the hardship, life goes on. Essential viewing.

Today this photo by Claire Hutton caught my eye. You could see it but instead Claire has written to say:

It’s with a rush then that I’ve just taken in GMB Akash’s photo set Take me Home:

Due to Bangladesh’s large population, inadequate seats on the trains and poverty, it is quite common to see a thick layer of people occupying the roof of a train. Frequent accidents, which occur when a free rider slips, are not enough to deter these stowaways of the railway.
