And that’s exactly what’s on show at a new duckrabbit exhibition at Reading Museum. Our photofilm ‘Fairground Attraction’, is being projected alongside fifty of Rabbit’s wonderful photos that capture the magic of Carter’s Steam Fair.

If you’re anywhere near Reading please do drop into the museum (see poster at the bottom of the page) and let us know what you think. And if, like the majority of people, you are nowhere near Reading, take three minutes out of your day to watch our photofilm Fairground Attraction below (or embed it to your facebook page or blog from here):

(click on the image below to bring up the photofilm, and click again to play)

Elizabeth Pascoe took on the authorities – and lost – when her home was earmarked for demolition under Liverpool’s Edge Lane development scheme.

Bill Booth has lived on a half-derelict street in Manchester for a decade and still has no idea if it will survive a regeneration scheme.

Theirs are among up to 400,000 terraced properties across the English North and Midlands which could be bulldozed using public money, under the controversial Housing Market Renewal or Pathfinder scheme.

The government says the communities being targeted are suffering from housing market failure and need intervention. Skeptics say poor communities are being kicked off valuable land which is being handed over to developers.

Launched in 2003, the Pathfinder has met with fierce resistance and legal challenges, general delays and now economic meltdown have led to parts it being scaled back. With a change of government looming, its very survival is now in doubt. For people like Pascoe it is too late – the battle is lost and they must find a new home, often ending up significantly out of pocket in the process.

Where it leaves communities like Booth’s is less certain. With more than half the homes in Clayton West boarded up and rotting, no developer on board and now an economy in recession, it is difficult to see a solution.

You know how it is. Friday night you’ve planned to go somewhere but everyone else pulls out. It gets to about nine o’clock and you think can I really be arsed? Nine times out of ten I’d lock myself away but a few Friday’s back I pushed myself out the door to go and have a look at the photography on show at Rhubarb Rhubarb’s international portfolio review here in Birmingham.

I’m glad I did. It was amazing opportunity to meet with forty of so photographers all crammed into a room with their work.

Good, bad, mad and promising, it was all there.

Normally these events are full of pretentious tossers, and they may have been lurking but for me it was brilliant opportunity to talk with photographers about their work. You could smoke the enthusiasm and get high. And where some portfolio reviews might be a cash earner everyone I spoke to genuinely seemed to be getting a lot out of the event.

Over the next week or so I’ll be writing about some of the good stuff on show.

First off then is James Clancey. An Irish photographer who describes himself thus:

There’s no bullshit about James and I was transfixed by his series BORDER COUNTRY, that opens with a motto for so many friends I’ve loved and lost along the way, for myself.

Border Country is a journey in and out of decay. Talking to James it relates to a journey made through bereavement. Some people will see darkness and decay in his photographs. Not me. I see places once loved, once useful but now abandoned. As a child these were the places of adventure, the spaces abandoned by adults that we could invade and call our own. Spaces we shared with nature.

I encourage you to see more of James’ photographs in this series on his website.

I was lucky enough this Easter to get into Imber, a tiny village in the middle of Salisbury Plain. Normally the village is closed to the public..what’s left of it anyway. I went out of personal curiousity really, I fancied motoring down there in my ancient and beautiful amazon…but thought I might as well take along a camera and little sound recorder. I spent a magical couple of afternoons there- the weather was magnificent, and if it had not been for the sporadic bursts of gunfire it would have been idyllic.

Hopefully after clicking the magic button and watching for a few minutes you will understand a bit more about ‘Little Imber’. Go full screen…live a little…I dare you

I hope you enjoy the piece.

duckrabbit readers have their say

Anonymous is raving:

Wow, wow wow… amazing photography and the audio is great too!

David White is very happy

Blimey…thanks…whoever you are; let’s get married

Adam Westbrook is presumptuous

You won’t want to marry me, but that was a beautifully told story, I was engrossed!

David White is no tart

had you got in sooner, I might have proposed…I’m engaged now to an annonymous poster…
THANKS for your kind words…I’m glad you liked it.

duckrabbit is impressed

just goes to show that photographers can record audio and collect photos at the same time, as HARD as that is … What’s even more impressive is that I know that David turned this round super, super fast …

Can you imagine the story being told as well through video?
