Great photo’s, but if the world is any less fucked for them I’m a coconut. (let’s face it we’re only talking about this award because the winner gets £50000)

UPDATE

On the Prix Pictet website Kofi Annan has said that,

The photographs were a compelling call for action to tackle climate change, the most serious humanitarian and environmental challenge facing the world today: “Only weeks separate us from the decisive negotiations on climate change in Copenhagen. We are confronted with the vital need to prepare the political momentum necessary for a fair and effective post-Kyoto agreement. The images in front of us remind us of the fragility of our planet and the damage we have already done. When we see these photographs we cannot close our eyes and remain indifferent. Through our actions and voices, we must keep building the pressure to secure urgent action at Copenhagen and beyond.”

duckrabbit must be completely missing something because without accompanying commentary I cannot see how these beautiful photographs tell a story about climate change that can have any impact? By saying they do is like declaring the impotency of photography. Infact if you read Nadav’s thoughtful personal statement he doesn’t even mention climate change.

Are these photo’s, and the bankability of the photographer, being manipulated to fuel an agenda that was never intended to be there? It is interesting that for the second year running a story about China has been picked. When it comes to the environment the West loves to beat up China. With this in mind duckrabbit wonders if the judges were making a very political statement by once again picking photographs of China?

The Prix Pictet is the world’s first prize dedicated to photography and sustainability. It has a unique mandate – to use the power of photography to communicate crucial messages to a global audience; and it has a unique goal – art of the highest order, applied to the immense social and environmental threats of the new millennium.

Seriously, I’m a big Obama fan and I think he’s done a lot already in reaching out to the world, but it seems a bit premature.

America, alongside China and India, is currently responsible for a large proportion of the world’s emissions of co2, the stuff that causes climate change. We’re pretty bad in the UK too.

If the predictions are correct then global warming is going to unleash suffering on a biblical scale.

Now if Obama could get together with the leaders of China and India and create a meaningful plan as to how we stop vast areas of the world going underwater that would be a great, great thing.

For me this award diminishes the nobel peace prize. But then everyone working in media knows that awards are bollocks anyway (accept when you win one!)

About this talk

Taryn Simon exhibits her startling take on photography — to reveal worlds and people we would never see otherwise. She shares two projects: one documents otherworldly locations typically kept secret from the public, the other involves haunting portraits of men convicted for crimes they did not commit.

About Taryn Simon

With a large-format camera and a knack for talking her way into forbidden zones, Taryn Simon photographs portions of the American infrastructure inaccessible to its inhabitants.

The so called crisis in photography should encourage World Press to embrace new uses of the medium if their selections aren’t to become a curiosity in a world that has since moved fast forward beyond the single image. To me photography is still essential. so why celebrate such a limited vision of the world?

Some time ago duckrabbit ran a silly competition offering $1000 to anyone who could successfully justify to Stan Banos why PDN set up a 22 strong all white photography judging panel.

The competition, and surrounding debate resulted in PDN putting out an apology of sorts. Today I received this comment from the US lawyer Steven Reyes:

‘I find it very interesting that the exact same issues that have been raised here, have been raised in other contexts were there are stark disparities (or absences) of minorities in a given profession or industry. Just a few months ago, the debate was about Sotomayor. For the past several decades it’s about the lack (other than a few notables) of non-stereotyped-acting roles for minorities or opportunities for directing, etc. The same debate arises when searching for faculty at universities, or CEO’s of corporations. The claim is often made that “they are not racist, they were just selecting the best most qualified people out there.”

While I agree that folks tend to be good (and not racist), a search for talent is only as good as how wide one’s search actually is. As a lawyer, when asked for recommendations for a board position, mine might tend to be lawyer-heavy (if I don’t make a concerted effort to think outside that box and outside the blinders that I might inherently have because of the interactions I have, both socially and professionally). Often, I’ll ask non-attorneys for their thoughts to ensure that my own blinders don’t prohibit me from overlooking well qualified people I might otherwise miss. Same thing I suspect occurs when searching for PDN judges.

The fact that these institutions/industries have lower proportions of minorities in them than one might otherwise expect is partially structural. Access to some of the opportunities to gain a foothold in an industry, whether by lack of educational opporutnities or by lack of ‘contacts’ is exacerbated greatly by the fact that a benign, self-perpetuating vicious cycle continues to lock out diversity. Until affirmative action, which isn’t about quotas, but about providing an equal opportunity for qualified people to get their foot in the door, universities were largely devoid of minorities, businesses didn’t outreach to minority applicants and still focused recruitment efforts in the same non-diverse manner.

Sometimes I think that discussions like these is enough for an institution to take steps towards asking some hard questions. Other times, in the case of more entrenched gender, racial, sex, and age discrimination, unfortunately, it takes more drastic (legal) action to undue those “blinders.”

I think the whole Sotomayor debate is instructive here. One one level having her as a Supreme Court justice is symbolic and for many Latinos represents a highly-visible example of having “made it” and that person can used as a role model for our kids. On another level, as the Supreme Court itself has acknowledged and (more recently in the past decade and a half) corporations, diversity helps to bring a diversity of viewpoints and perspectives to the table — whether at a law school, at a marketing meeting, at the Supreme Court, in a college classroom, or at the dinner table. Certainly, having a diversity of perspectives while judging a photography contest could prove just as beneficial.Does this mean, that the 24 judges didn’t judge based only on content, form, technical skill, etc.? Nope. But just focusing on that question ignores the broader issue of the existence of a disparity.

At any rate, I’m looking forward to see what the 2010 PDN judge pool looks like.’

duckrabbit has just got the nod for a grant from the warm and supportive people at the CBA. This means that we’ll be off to Bangladesh and the Maldives covering stories related to climate change. What’s really important is the money specifically supports a multimedia approach to photojournalism. It’s a recognition that there are fresh ways of telling stories outside of the printed page.

It will be the first time David and I have worked together overseas, though we met in Egypt. And of course this being a duckrabbit project we’ll be offering a workshop for local photographers who are interested in using multimedia to tell stories.

That’s important to duckrabbit. We grew out of a training project in Kenya that Benjamin ran, which was a continuation from his work in Ethiopia training journalists.

Think about it.

Its just as important who is telling a story, as the fact that a story gets told.

Power to the people. No really.

Having just seen the winner of The Press Photographer’s Year, I completely understand now why Kenyan photographers get totally pissed off so many of the photography jobs go to visitors to their country (NGO or otherwise).

The argument being that outsiders are better equipped to deliver (yeah right).

The winners photo was taken in Kenya. The shot is lovely but underwhelming. Do the seven judges really believe this is the best photo taken by a UK based snapper in 2008 or were they taking ketamine? (maybe they just couldn’t agree)

It’s true I’m no photographer but if you really want to persuade me your industry is worth saving, that it’s worth forking out for professionals rather then nicking the stuff off flickr, then surely you’ve got a to make a better statement then this … or am I missing something?

On another note congrats to PPY they managed to outdo this years POYI and now infamous PDN photography competitions by having an all male, all white judging panel, although I see at least one of them has experience of shooting page three girls so they must be in touch with their feminine side.

All that said there is some cracking, cracking work on show. Plenty to make us proud of our UK photogs. Have a look and let us know what you think? (congrats to all the winners, and also the judges who picked some stunning work, lets just hope we see a more diverse panel next year)

DANIEL BASED IN SOUTH AFRICA RESPONDS

I agree with you about the Kenyan situation. I’ve found that when you mention photographers in Africa, you often are greeted by Europeans and Americans based here, rarely does anyone speak about the local talent.

There is a wealth of talent here in Africa, it’s just that the perception is foreigners are better, i mean how can a man/woman from Africa be better than someone who’s living in NYC.

Kinda pisses me off, but this continent will always be the source of the news and not the creator. I’m trying to change that by interviewing, and showcasing, the work of African photographers on my blog. Only time will tell I guess

duckrabbit

People do check out Daniels blog. He’s a cool writer and its great that he’s making the effort to highlight talent that we wouldn’t otherwise hear about.

Benjamin Hillier Agrees:

I totally agree with you! The Media, especially the Photo-Business is still dominated by the western Photojournalists; but there is also here a crackdown. More and more the Photojournalists get no Jobs but the Photos get delivered by “Backpackers” and other white (mostly male) Travelers/Tourists. So things are getting worse, because the somehow “ethnologic” attitude get’s busted for the Idea of Fun, Exotism and plain Ignorance.

I am also a white, male Photojournalist, though in the vein of the “new times”, so often without money or help. But still I try to include other people from the Country if I take some Photos/Stories there, so that everybody can participate within the Projects.

duckrabbit

Benjamin thanks for your thoughts. It would terrible if people stopped travelling and stopped photographing. I would never argue for that. When we do travel through to engage with local photographers has to be a good thing for everyone. In my own case I might even get a lesson in photography as well as culture.

It’s like having a bread competition in which the person who grounds the flour gets the the award and the baker just gets mentioned as an afterthought.

Maybe they should call it the ‘award ONLY for the photography featured in a multimedia piece, NOT the sound, editing or production’, or maybe they should just WAKE UP.

No doubt the photography industry needs committed producers like Anna S who will bring the work to new audiences more than she needs them.

Well done Anna.

duckrabbit today launches an exciting new free entry photo competition with a twist. One lucky person will win a lip smackingly beautiful $1000. The task is simple … all you need to do is restore a little bit of duckrabbit’s faith in the world. Intrigued? Read on …

The roots of duckrabbit’s competition stated several weeks ago when I came across a powerful post on Stan Banos’ Reciprocity failure. Banos writes:

‘A year or so ago, I sent a “Letter to the Editor” of PDN (which they published) observing how little things had changed in the 35 years I have been involved in photography. More specifically, it was commenting on their “Major Movers and Shakers of Photography” issue- in which the major curators, editors, gallery owners, and publishers featured were all (with the possible exception of one Asian female)… white. OK, OK, one can’t possibly pin PDN with the blame for lack of minority representation in the upper echelon of the photographic universe. Agreed.

Then I get my hands on the PDN May 2009 Photo Annual and check out their 24 (not a half dozen, or ten, or a baker’s dozen at that- but 24!) judges, each and every one- white, white and white! I know it can’t possibly be something as absurdly ridiculous as the now trite mantra of- “I just don’t see race.” It’s what year, what century, what presidency? Just how is it that to this day, people of color are still not represented anywhere near proportionately in these creative command positions?

… the other reasons for such obvious exclusion are even more nefarious and depressing, ranging from out an out indifference to blatant passive racism. Regardless, I still don’t know what possible, plausible excuse could exist for an all white jury from a publication of such influence.’

The following day Banos went on to write:

‘Some of us only have to worry about race when we’re in certain neighborhoods, for others it’s a crucial and defining factor throughout our lives. Ultimately, it’s something that affects us all. It’s nice to vote for a symbol; it’s more important to deal with everyday realities and consequences. This country and planet has witnessed too many of the ensuing horrors when we don’t.’

duckrabbit’s competition is simple. Stan Banos claims PDN’s action is in part an example of ‘passive racism.’ Surely an outrageous slur on the photographic industry? In the absence of PDN feeling the need to respond, duckrabbit are offering $1000 to anyone who can prove Banos wrong.

Simple.

To be honest duckrabbit presumed Banos must have made a mistake somewhere. Then I noticed that Pete Brook, author of the blog Prison Photography (one of the most intelligent reads on this or any other planet) added that this was a blatant act of “Passive racism”. duckrabbit sat up. Maybe this wasn’t just the shooting off of a lone blogger?

Yesterday I came across PDN’s website where they are making a wonderful song and dance of their judging panel in all its glorious lack of color. My conscience cracked.

It just seems like a big two fingers up to a future world that is more equal than the one we’re living in right now.

Photojournalism has been responsible in bringing to our attention some of the terrible inequalities that plague this planet. It’s an industry and an art that has made a difference, has changed the way that people like me think and feel about the world. But like Pete Brook, as an outsider, I’m starting to wonder, if at the heart of the industry lies a dark hypocrisy, so entrenched that no-one dares speak about it. I’m starting to feel cheated.

Whilst photography has been hell bent on changing the world for passion and for profit, perhaps it has failed to change itself? Failed to be the change that it wants to see in the world?

At duckrabbit we’ve decided to encourage the debate. We’re responding to PDN’s competition with one of our own. We’re asking them to prove Stan wrong, to engage with his comments, or else at the very least acknowledge the issue. That’s all. And we’re offering $1000 to the first person, anyone, who can come to PDN’s defense and answer his question as to ‘what possible, plausible excuse could exist for an all white jury from a publication of such influence?’

Here are the list of PDN’s judges. Maybe you know one of them? If so perhaps you could drop them an email and let them know that there is a grand up for grabs. I bet they are all good people, but I wonder if they feel a twinge of embarrassment when they look down the list?

The money’s on the table. The cards have been dealt. Which way you going to bet?

(To win simply post your submission. We’ll pop it up on the blog. We’ll pay out to the first person who can convince Stan Banos. You have two weeks)
