Photographer Terje Hellesø, last year’s winner of the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency’s Nature Photographer of the Year Award admitted this weekend that he’d faked the images, photoshopping images of wild lynx and other elusive animals into his own nature scenes.  He was tracked down and confronted by Swedish conservationist Gunnar Gloeson who noticed that a lynx in one of Hellesø’ summer shots appeared to have its winter fur.

Apparently Hellesø’ acceptance speech at last year’s awards included the words “we nature photographers should never forget the responsibility we have with our images, from both a documentary and artistic perspective”.

Echoes of last year’s Natural History Museum World Wildlife Photographer of the Year award, stripped from winner Jose Luis Rodriguez for using a trained wolf.  At least he had actually taken a photo of an animal…
