Audio Slideshow – The Veterans

Of all the documentaries and features I made for BBC Radio none got to me more than the ones I made about the First World War.  On Flanders fields I came to some small understanding of the ultimate sacrifice that so many men paid, and the cost to their loved ones at home. Walking those fields was a deeply humbling experience.

A few weeks back a young British photographer, Ian Forsyth, asked me to have a look at his multimedia on his website.  To tell you the truth he’s one of the few UK photographers actually having a crack at this stuff. From what I can gather, unlike in the US, they haven’t even started teaching multimedia production on UK photography courses.  Compared to the US, it feels a bit like we’re living in the dark ages here.

Anyway I was particularly taken with a piece Ian has made about war veterans, featuring the voice of a paratrooper recalling the D day landings. It makes an interesting companion piece to David Burnet’s multimedia feature ‘Faces of D Day’ in TIME.

“I was there, no-one can take that away from me.”
