The BBC is reporting that rebel troops in Eastern Congo have taken over the headquarters of Virunga national park, home to one of the last surviving populations of mountain gorillas.
Recent conflict in Congo and its aftermath has led to the estimated deaths of a staggering 5.4 million people, a figure impossible for me to compute. That’s 8% of the population, something that has received little attention, but when eight mountain Gorillas got slaughtered the media went ape.
The plight of the gorillas is just one tragedy amongst many, but their vulnerability has been scorched into the minds of so many people by Brent Stirton’s photographs.
If you haven’t seen them you’re in for a sobering treat, if you have look again.
